Sports Betting in Las Vegas
January 21, 2009
Sports betting in Las Vegas is far bigger than what most people think. While the immediate image seared into people’s minds when Las Vegas gambling happens to be brought up mostly involves casino games, it must also be known that sports betting is just as popular (if not more popular, some people like to argue) than playing the slots or the tables. Sports betting essentially deals with the outcome of a sports event, particularly sports events such as auto racing, horse racing, baseball, hockey, basketball, golf, boxing and football. Usually, this simply involves picking the team or individual who you think is going to win the match or even the entire tournament or season.
Of course, it may be more complex than that: for example, within the context of an auto race, a person may choose to not bet on who’s going to win the race, but rather which of two pre-chosen drivers would perform better than the other. Another example would be to wager on the number of points by which a team would win, or the particular move that would determine the victory.
However, it must be noted that whatever bet you make must be made according to the predetermined parameters or odds that have been stated in the betting books. Make sure that you solidly know the odds before making your bet – although sports betting is considered to be a “game” based on luck (because you are allowed no means of being able to control – even minutely – the outcome of the bet), some of it is also based on probabilities. For example, in a boxing match, Oscar dela Hoya and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao face off and (provided we had not already witnessed dela Hoya’s crushing defeat under Pacman’s fist) according to the books, dela Hoya is favored to win the match. Some people would bet on the favored boxer dela Hoya, based on the books which in turn were based on the overall career history of that fighter. Others, on the other hand, would place their bets on Pacman, not only because of his appeal as an underdog, but also because he himself has a history of winning as the underdog. Sports betting in Las Vegas, despite what some people believe, require a lot of consideration. You can’t simply jump into sports betting without knowing anything.
That being said, there are a few things that you must remember when you try your hand at sports betting in Las Vegas. The first is this: make sure that you have someone trustworthy with you who knows how the Las Vegas books work and bet for whoever he or she is betting on. That way, you not only get to see firsthand how the process works but also have someone on hand to explain what the numbers mean. Just be sure to tell your friend not to get overexcited and try to teach you the more complicated aspects of sports betting. The second thing you have to remember is to keep your bet simple: place your bet on who you’d think would win, and not any of those other fancy bets that involve the circumstances of the win. It wouldn’t do to confuse yourself.
