On Luck vs. Skill

December 18, 2008

It has been said before, but it’s always safe to say it again – there are only two kinds of people in the world: the ones who rely on luck, and the ones who rely on skill. Of course, to truly be successful, one must learn to harness both. Still, there is no denying the fact that people will always lean more towards either one of those two. And there is no better place to witness this than at a casino in the wonderful, glittering city of Las Vegas.

While many people simply think of Las Vegas as one of the great Sin Cities of the world (another one is Amsterdam), there are others who choose to see the city’s gaming establishments as a means of identifying who they are as men and women. And as was mentioned before, the casinos that a person finds in city of Las Vegas are miniature worlds that depict how a person goes about his or her life.

There are some who prefer to rely on luck, where they have little to no control over the circumstances of the game. If you were to observe the casinos in Vegas, you will surely discover that most people like relying on chance – large areas of the floor are dedicated to slot machines. Even if you do step outside the casino, you will most definitely find more than your fair share of sporting events, events in which you can bet on winners or the circumstances of the win. These particular Las Vegas games often favor the House, and people who play them are thrilled at the prospect of beating the odds without making too much effort. Evidently, many games of luck are for thrills involving uncertainty – they are appealing because they require something resembling faith or hope.

Other people however, prefer to rely on skill, where they can tweak the circumstances of the game in order to come out on top. Just as popular as the slot machines in the city of Las Vegas are the card tables where outwitting, outsmarting or outplaying both the dealer and other people would be proverbial name of the game. Blackjack, poker, and other such card games require a person to observe and make decisions (based on tactics and what has been observed) in order to turn the game in their favor. While it is true that the House DOES win in these games, players often have a better chance of beating the House in situations like this. The thrill of games relying on skill is a person’s knowledge that he or she can play the game better than anyone else, and the implication that they will always have SOME sort of control over the future.

You may all be thinking “What the heck is this person’s point?” at this stage, so it is perhaps time to say that this is all about choosing the right game for yourself. You have to ask: “Am I a person who relies on luck, or a person who relies on skill?” Only when you have answered that question could you truly be able to appreciate all these games that you will find in the city of Las Vegas. When you look at these games not as opportunity to earn cash, but rather an extension of your personality, then your experience of Las Vegas and other such places will take on a whole other meaning – it would be equated to fun and enjoyment.
It is very important that you understand the type of person you are before you go to Las Vegas so that you’d be better able choose the game that you would play. So right here, right now, ask yourself: “Am I a person who relies on luck, or a person who relies on skill?”
